The YMCA is offering a “Parents’ Night Out” at Polaris during our Auction on April 10th. You can drop kids off starting at 6:00, and pick them up by 11:00. The cost is $30 for the first child, and $15 for each sibling. We need 5 families to sign up in order to run it. Payment is due with sign-up and must be in by Friday, April 3rd. Send a check to school with a note stating it’s for the Parents’ Night Out and the names of the children who will attend.

Learning Celebration
We had another great celebration of students’ learning. Our teachers and students amazed us with their poetry, writing pieces and their varied projects that demonstrated ‘how things work.’ This month’s Core Value is responsibility and it really showed but I also witnessed community, friendship, citizenship, caring, acceptance and respect!!

We will be discussing current schools as well as the possibilities of opening a new charter school for ages 12 and up! Responsibility
This week we talked about responsibility rather than excuses. Example of excuses were shared and then we changed it to a statement of responsibility. For example “it broke” can be changed to “I broke it. What can I do to fix it?”
Mrs. V’s Class Share
During the second trimester, each of the students in Mrs. V’s class picked an inventor and invention to research and they presented this during the learning celebration. At Thursday’s Morning Gathering they shared the introduction they performed. Each student introduced themselves and they performed a dance. I have not been able to get the song “Cotton Eyed Joe” out of my head since! Great job Pavo class!!

Music Notes

Breakthrough NH
Breakthrough Manchester is currently recruiting sixth grade applicants to our tuition-free, three-year, challenging academic summer program. The original deadline for applications was March 12, but we are extending the deadline to Friday, March 27th for any interested applicants.
Students are only recruited if they are currently in 6th grade, so this is the only opportunity for these students to apply.
Breakthrough is intended to provide bright, motivated students who live within Manchester city limits with the chance to prevent summer slide and enter high school fully prepared to succeed in rigorous college preparatory coursework and eventually matriculate to a four-year college.
We are especially interested in reaching out to students who:
– are eligible for free or reduced lunch (low to moderate income)
– will be the first in their family to attend a 4-year college or university in the US
– come from a single parent household or live with relatives or guardians
– speak a language other than English at home
– represent a racial or ethnic minority that is underrepresented on college campuses

Smarter Balanced
Our students in “grades” 3 – 6 will be taking the Smarter Balanced Assessment that is required by the state. This replaces the NECAP exam (the science test will still be administrated in May). We are still working out the schedule but students will likely be tested in two hour sessions over the course of five days. The Smarter Balanced test consists of an English/Language Arts portion and a Math portion. Within each of those subjects, there are two type of tests, a computer adaptive test (CAT) and a performance task (PT). The CAT asks one question at a time and adjusts the difficulty according to students’ answers. The English/Language Arts PT is a writing task administered over two days. On day one, students read articles related to a topic and answer open ended questions. During day two students will be asked to write a longer piece that requires them to use the five steps in the writing process. The math PT is a multi-step, real-world math problem. NHPCSA Best Practices Conference
Polaris staff had the opportunity to attend a day of professional development at the annual NHPCSA Best Practices Conferences on March 13th. Charter schools from all over the state were represented and we were able to choose four different break out sessions on topics most relevant to our roles. It is great to collaborate and share resources with these other great schools!
Responsibility
Since there was no school last Friday, Mrs. Post’s class shared the projects that they have been working on this trimester. Students made machine’s designed for a specific task. They have learned a lot about trial and error and they showcased some awesome inventions! Only one picture from a distance is shown so as not to ruin the surprises for our Learning Celebration next Wednesday.
On Tuesday we watched a video about responsibility. You can view it here. In one the professional development sessions we attended last Friday, Mrs. Rainey, Ms. Haynes and I learned a new song that we taught to the kids on Wednesday. Ask them to sing “Alive/Awake/Alert/Enthusiastic!”

Happenings in Mrs. Rainey’s Class
The group studying animals in Mrs. Rainey’s class has been learning about food chains, food webs and owls. This week, they formed hypotheses about what they would find when they dissected an owl pellet to find out more about what an owl eats. They dissected the owl pellets and next week, they will work on classifying the bones and rebuilding the skeletons of the animals they found.

Friday was also Mrs. Rainey’s class share day. After reading the book Wonder, students wanted to create anti-bullying videos to educate other students about this topic. They worked hard to demonstrate multiple scenarios of bullying and why it is important to stand up to a bully. These videos will be shown at the Learning Celebration. We are very excited to share these videos with you!
World Language
Hola Familias,
I am the new Spanish teacher and it has been a pleasure getting to know your children this past week. We spent the first class introducing ourselves and meeting some new amigos; Señorita Perrita y Señor Burro. We practiced counting and even searched for oro (gold)!
It is exciting to be a part of the Polaris community. I am currently a certified K-8 Elementary Ed teacher and have a bachelor’s degree in Spanish too. I’m also a very proud mom to four children and coach field hockey at Londonderry Middle School in the Fall. I had previously taught 2nd grade in a Spanish Immersion classroom before staying home with my kids. While raising my children I taught Spanish to preschoolers and kindergarteners and substituted at local schools. Now, I am looking forward to this new opportunity and chapter in my life.
I believe that it’s important to try to teach in a fun and enjoyable way. I enjoy teaching using a variety of styles to help reach the various learning abilities. Therefore, along with learning some typical Spanish lessons the kids will be playing games, doing projects, listening to music, watching Spanish videos and much more.
Some kids may find it helpful to have a single subject notebook they could use for Spanish. Also, if anyone would like to donate any old magazines, newspapers, toilet paper or paper towel rolls, tissue paper and/or streamers (like the ones you use for birthday parties) for some projects I have planned that would be great. HB563
IT PASSED! The House voted to pass HB563 which brings hope that the much needed increase in funding for charter will occur. Our students receive 45% of the average spent for other public school students. In the last 6 years, as spending has increased locally for the other public school students, the amount for charter students fell to only 40%. As amended, HB 563 adds the CPI to the $2,000 or an increase of $36 per student for 2016-17 (FY2016). For 2017-18 (FY2017), the amount per charter student increases by $1,036 and will be increased by CPI going forward. Now this will head to the Senate for a vote in June. Thank you to everyone who took the time to write or call their representative and/or show their support at the state house.
Destination Imagination
Destination Imagination challenges took place this weekend. The Primary and Intermediate teams did a wonderful job! The Intermediate DI team is going to State tournament! Congratulations to: AJ, Finn, Devansh, Xavier, Charlotte, Daniel and Nikosia (Primary team pictured below).
Pi Day
Miss Haynes’ class celebrated Pi Day of the Century this week. As part of their celebration, they watched a few short videos to learn about the history of Pi and to learn what pi really is. (Pi=circumference/diameter). They then went around the classroom looking for circles to measure the circumference and diameter of so that they could calculate pi and see how close they could get to it. The group that got the closest came out with 3.1575. The class also had a contest to see who could memorize the most digits of pi. Alex won by memorizing 26 digits! Lastly, they ended their celebration by making Pi Day shirts and having their friends sign them.
Responsibility
We got off to a late start on Tuesday so we spent a little time talking about responsible behavior in the Gathering Room. On Wednesday, we read a story called The Big Eraser. In it, a younger girl was struggling with mistakes she made in math as well as a bigger mistakes in life. She had a a large eraser that she could use to erase math errors and reflected how it would be nice if she could use it when she knocked over a picture frame and broke it. We talked about how we all mistakes and several students shared some of their personal examples. We cannot erase mistakes however we can take responsibility for them and make up for it.
I asked Mrs. Rainey to do an activity that she had done in her class with all students at Morning Gathering. Using a ball of yarn, students held it and then threw it to another student creating a pretty web design. After, Mrs. Rainey had the students drop their end one at a time. It created a jumbled mess. The point of the exercise was to demonstrate that when we all work together, we create something good. However, one one or more of do not hold up our part, it effects everyone.
Fisher Cat’s Game
Full Day on Wednesday, April 15th to be a Home run!
It is always a difficult to think about adding on time to make up for snow days. We do not have exact date of the end of school, but do anticipate some make up time to be required. We found a very fun way to make up some of those hours that we think will be a home run with Polaris students!
Polaris Charter School has accepted the opportunity to attend the Fisher Cats Educational Day baseball game on Wednesday, April 15, 2015. (We’ve already placed the order for sunshine!)
Tickets and bussing will be provided courtesy of Youk’s Kids (Foundation of Kevin Youkilis, former Red Sox player). The game time is at 10:35 and school on April 15, 2015 will be a FULL DAY in order to take in all the day has to offer. Teachers will be provided with curriculum materials that meet common core standards to integrate the day into their learning plans. The day will include: An exhibit from the McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center, Mad Science, a Petting Zoo, Educational messages on the Videoboard, opportunities for students and teachers to participate in on field activities, AND more
Please mark your calendar: April 15, 2015 as a FULL day of school. Save the date if you might be willing to chaperone (teachers will contact you with more details closer to the event.) Students will pack their own lunch and get to eat at the ballpark!
Please note: if you are signed up for extended care will be responsible for your regular payments even though the school day has been extended. This is part of the contract agreement with the YMCA. YMCA Staff will spend this time organizing for fun spring activities on behalf of Polaris students. Art Room News
Hello!
My name is Keleigh Thompson and I recently became the art teacher at Polaris Charter School and I am so excited to get to know your child through the arts! I wanted to take this opportunity to introduce myself to you, and give you a direct way of contacting me should you ever need to.
I studied for five years at the New Hampshire Institute of Art right here in Manchester and earned my degree in Ceramics and K-12 Art Education. I’ve wanted to teach since I was young- my mother teaches and I always admired how much she cared about her students and cared about helping them become the best they could be, and I hope that I can do the same here at Polaris.
In my free time I enjoy sewing, learning about computers, and discovering new artwork, especially pottery. I love learning new things, and I know that for every bit I hope to teach your child, they will also teach me!
I am thrilled to have joined the Polaris community and would like to do everything I can to make my classroom a safe, comfortable, encouraging environment where your child feels like they can be creative and express their individuality while learning essential life skills such as problem solving. If ever you have any thoughts, concerns, or would just like to check in, please do not hesitate to reach out! My goal is to guide your child in a way that fits their individual learning style, and I am always open to your input and ideas.

If you feel like you would like to donate something to our art room we love recycled items! Plastic or glass containers from things like pampers wipes, jars of jelly, cereal, cottage cheese, coffee, Tide, baby food, country crock butter, yogurt, etc are really useful for storing art supplies! Check out this awesome Pinterest search- it will give you a good idea of how we can use what you might normally throw away!
If you ever want to send something in with your child, Tuesdays and Thursdays are best because they can bring it right to the art room and I will be there, but they can also stop by the art room on another day and leave any containers you would like to donate somewhere on the side of the room.

Come browse exhibits from environmental and conservation organizations throughout the state. See live animals, big fish and trained falcons. Try your hand at archery, casting, fly-tying and B-B gun shooting. Watch retriever dogs in action. Get creative with hands-on craft activities for the kids. N.H. Department of Environmental Services staff will be on hand to help you discover new trends in recycling, environmental protection and energy-efficient hybrid vehicles. This event is set for Saturday, April 18th, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on the grounds of the Fish and Game Department at 11 Hazen Drive in Concord, N.H. Lottery for 2015-2016
The lottery for the 2015-2016 school year was held on March 6th. We were delighted to have Frank Mulgrew, President of Mount Washington College, draw the numbers. The results are pictured below:
How Things Work
This week, primary students rotated classes and have been learning about body systems to prepare for Friday’s field trip to the Montshire Museum. They used play dough that they made to make sculptures of the brain and they made simulated lungs with balloons, straws and a bottle.
Responsibility
During the month of March, we will be focusing on the Core Value of Responsibility. We started by defining what it means and discussing some synonyms. We next talked about examples of how to show it. Some of the thoughts students shared were: clean up after yourself, pick up trash, help with chores at home, listen when someone is talking and if someone lets you borrow something of theirs take care of it. On Thursday we watched a short documentary about kids and responsibility. You can view it here. Ms. Haynes will do her class share on Monday since the Primary classes went on a field trip so on Friday we played a guessing game that revealed a quote:

Art Room News
Looking ahead:
Visiting Fiber Artist, Cheryl Holbert is scheduled for late March and April!
Despite the interruptions of a few snow days, over the last few weeks the intermediate students have become block-print-makers. Learning by doing, they cut into lino-blocks after transferring design (mirror image). They have gotten the hang of braying the ink and now see the results of the whole process on paper! They were industrious and absorbed in their work. I am reasonably confident that given the tools, they can make it all happen again.
The primary students got into watercolors, having new “pans” of assorted colors for each individual on one lesson, and a wax-resist and aqua for another. I celebrated their creativity as they did these! I love seeing the creative and varied outcomes.
I have enjoyed exploring art with the students at Polaris. Thank you for the opportunity to work with your sons and daughters! I have learned as much as they, in different ways. I am excited at beginning my new position at the Currier’s Art Center….the Museum and the Center are two of my favorite places!
For students interested in more Art, you might want to take a look at the many great classes offered at the Art Center this spring and summer. Maybe I will see you there!

- Our Lost and Found has swollen to include 2 overflowing bins of hats, mittens, boots, snow pants, sweatshirts, books, and water bottles among other items. Please encourage your child to look through the collection for lost items or stop by yourself and take a look. Any unclaimed items will be donated at the end of next week, Thursday 3/12.

Our total donation amount was $4868, and after the cost of the prizes, we netted $3265 for the PlaySpace fund!
Miss Gilbert’s kids read the most of any primary class, and Miss Haynes’ kids read the most of the intermediate classes.
Prizes will be handed out next week.

AUCTION – Friday, April 10th, 6:30 PM

Does your child love to play video games? He or she can learn to Program with Tynker! Each student will be taken through a series of lessons on the computer and then given time to create their own programs. What is Tynker? Tynker is the easiest way for kids in elementary and middle school to learn programming and computational thinking skills. Learning is intuitive and interactive with the visual drag-n-drop coding that eliminates syntax. Tynker’s goal is to provide every child with a solid foundation in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) thinking abilities to prepare them for 21st century degrees and careers.
