Primary Class Field Trip

The Primary Class visited the SEE Science Center on Thursday. This was a great learning experience that tied into their study of Simple Machines and “How Things Work”. Students got to experience a Van-de-Graaff, Harmonograph and a Moonwalk. Students also participated in a LEGO team build!

Intermediate Field Trip

Mrs. Apac and Mr. Bailey’s classes visited the Manchester Millyard Museum Friday. The students learned about the industrial revolution in New Hampshire. Some of the topics covered were hydro power, steam engines and what life was like for children during the industrial revolution. We completed a fun scavenger hunt activity where each group became experts in one area of the museum and presented what they learned to the whole group. We also learned about inventors, including “Lady Edison”, Margaret Knight. She started inventing when she was only 12 years old and received 27 patents in her lifetime. Her inventions include shoe-manufacturing machines, a “dress shield” to protect garments from perspiration, a rotary engine as well as an internal combustion engine.

PEF News

ANNUAL GALA UPDATE

Over just a few years, the PEF annual auction fundraiser has evolved from a small breakfast with a few items to a large scale event expected to raise more than $10,000 this year for Polaris.

This year the fundraising event will evolve yet again. In lieu of the auction fundraiser, we will be hosting a Gala to raise additional monies for Polaris. We expect the 2018 Gala will attract local businesses and philanthropists leading to a wider net of donors.

We are privileged this year to have some very influential and experienced Gala chairs working hard to coordinate this event in ways that will maximize the overall financial benefit to Polaris and our children.

This year’s gala will have no auction component. It will be a fun, adult only gala event with a more upscale menu.

Thank you in advance for understanding this new concept to widen the support for Polaris Charter School, as we aim to fulfill the Polaris Educational Foundation mission for 2018.

The event will be held March 24, 2018 at LaBelle Winery in Amherst, NH.

Information on ticket sales will be posted to the PEF Facebook page and Polaris Newsletter in the near future. Mark your calendars!

AWARD WINNING NORTH STAR DANCE

PLEASE NOTE THE DATE CHANGE: The dance will be held April 7, 2108 NOT April 8, 2018

The family dance event that earned the award by PTO Today as best family event of the year will return and move to Founder’s Academy for more fun! The event will be April 7th.

We will be moving some of the fun items that were once part of the auction part of the gala to this event. If you have any items, gift baskets or can get gift certificates from your business we welcome your donations!

WE ARE IN NEED OF A FREE DJ-and we know there is a parent that volunteered but have not been able to find them, can you help?

We also need a strong committee to keep the best event all year going. Please e-mail pef@polarischarterschool.org to get started.

If you could run an event such as a robotics tournament, ninja challenge, hoops tournament or something that will be appealing to our non-dancers please let us know!

MAJOR CHANGES FOR THE PEF NEXT YEAR

The overwhelming majority of those who run the PEF as board member will be completing their final year this year. This organization needs several new parents to step up and get ready to take on the challenges of next year and get some training on how things run before the current members leave their posts (and in many cases the school). Please take the time to consider how you can contribute.

In addition to current board positions, we recognize a chair to start a robotics program and take over Student Ambassadors.

MORE TO COME!

A sledding party, a student choice event, the annual readathon and much more are in progress! Stay tuned…

Best Wishes,

Pegasus Class

Students from Ms. Gilbert’s class showed their love of Polaris by drawing pictures!

Core Value – Fairness

We read the book the “The Little Red Hen” by Paul Galdone.  The little red hen lived with at cat, dog and mouse in a cozy house.  While the hen did all of the house work, the rest napped all day. One day, the little red hen found some grains of wheat which she planted and tended to. When she asked for help, the cat, dog and mouse all replied “not I.” Eventually, the wheat was harvested and ground into flour which the hen used to make a delicious cake. As soon as the cat, dog and mouse smelled it baking, they woke from their naps expecting it to be shared with them. However, since the little red hen had done all of the work, she ate the cake all by herself.

We related to this to our work in the classroom on projects. It’s not fair if one person does most of the work while others sit back. It is important for everyone to share the responsibility and the rewards.

Star Student

Our Star Students recognized on February 12 were: Daisy, Lucas, Christian, Molly, Madelyn, Mason and Bella.

Congratulations!

Pegasus Class Share

The Pegasus classroom celebrated Valentine’s Day this week by writing compliments for each other with an activity called “I give a rose”. We talked about recognizing the good in people, even if that person isn’t our best friend. We tied this activity in with our core value of fairness by assigning each student a different classmate to write a compliment for. Some students stepped up and made a second compliment for those who were absent the day of our activity to ensure that no one felt left out!

Late Arrival Policy

We provide a full twenty minute arrival period to allow for unpredictable traffic conditions and to
ensure that your child is able to settle before Morning Gathering starts.
Because of the importance of this Gathering time, we ask that parents attempt to limit late arrivals to
unavoidable circumstances. If you cannot avoid a late arrival, please contact the school office before
8:20 a.m. to notify us that your child will be late.
EITHER:
Email attendance@polarischarterschool.org. Messages should include the student’s name,
parent’s name, and the reason for the absence.
OR:
Call the attendance line (634-0034) AND submit a written verification of the reason for the
tardiness to the school office upon the student’s arrival.
If you arrive after 8:20, please accompany your child into the school building and sign them in on the
Student Attendance Log on the main floor. They will be marked tardy. The tardiness will be
considered unexcused unless one of the designated exceptions applies or there was an unavoidable
travel delay

Core Value – Fairness

February is Fairness month! We first talked about what it means. To help illustrate this, we viewed the following cartoon:

Students were able to really grasp that everyone getting the same thing is not necessarily fair.

Star Student

Our Star Students recognized on February 5 were: Matthew, Kamden, Mikail, Tricia, Jolie, Nicholas and Kaelan

Congratulations!

Vela Class Share

The Vela Class shared recent projects they have been working on.  Students have been learning about Simple Machines and made marble ramps on the walls to control which direction their marbles traveled.  They also recently did a writing/art project based on the book Chicka Chicka Boom Boom and wrote snowmen poems.

Primary Class Visit

Primary had ANOTHER parent visit this week!!  Mr. Whitney came in on Friday, and taught us all about Polarized Light!!  He first taught us about what an engineer is and what they do.  Then he told us all about Polarized Light and what that is!  Mr. Whitney explained what a polarizer is, and had enough for each student to try using two polarizers to look at the light!  We learned that when you have one polarizer, the light still comes through, but when you add a second one and turn it, the light is blocked.  We also learned that if you add a third polarizer to the MIDDLE, diagonally, the light was no longer blocked!  We then got to create Polarized Light Art!  Thank you for the AMAZING visit Mr. Whitney!  I know the kids won’t soon forget this visit!!

Scholastic Book Fair

February 5-9, Polaris will have our first Scholastic Book Fair! This book fair will help us earn free books for our library! The book fair will be held at school as well as online. Students will visit the book fair with their classes for a preview of what is available. They will be able to complete a wish list which parents can then choose to buy books from, or add them to the class wishlist. Each class will have a wishlist for community members and parents who wish to donate a book to their child’s classroom. Donated books will be adorned with a special bookplate acknowledging the donor. If you are interested in donating but cannot attend, please email Mrs. Apac at b.apac@polarischarterschool.org

We will also host a family night so families can shop with their children.  You can also watch a parent video about the book fair at http://www.scholastic.com/bookfairs/parentvideo

Star Students

Our Star Students recognized on January 29 were: Khoi, Lilly, Maya, Colton, Jace, Tricia and Ahmed

Congratulations!

Sculptor Class Share

Last week the Sculptor class shared their planet projects, which includes creating a government system, educational system and inventions for their planet.

Hydra Class Share

Miss Haynes’ class has been learning about poetry, and they read poems from the book Clay Feet. In this book, the illustrator drew pictures and then the poet wrote poems based on the illustrations instead of the other way around. Miss Haynes’ class did the same thing. Each student drew a picture of anything they wanted, and then the pictures were randomly handed out to the class. They then had to write a poem based on the picture they received. Students studied different types of poems and got to choose which kind they wanted to write. They came up  some very descriptive poetry!

Primary Class Visit

Mr.Velez came to visit the Primary Classrooms this week.  During his visit, he led the three Primary classes in an exciting and engaging conversation about the 6 simple machines they have been learning about.  He asked the students questions that tested their knowledge of simple machines!  He ended his visit by challenging the students to engineer a solution to an everyday problem!  The students had to work in groups to figure out how they would get a piano from the Gathering Room to a moving truck in the parking lot!  Students needed to collaborate and decide what they would need, how they would use it, and act out what they would do!  It was a great visit that the students couldn’t stop talking about!!

Intermediate Class Field Trip

Mr. Bailey’s and Mrs. Apac’s class went on a field trip to Saint Paul’s School. High school students created presentations about thermodynamics and temperature for Polaris students. The presentations included aerodynamics of aircraft’s, expanding and condensing molecules, temperature in space and much more. After these experiments, we learned a little bit about space and went on a tour of the school. During the tour, we saw Saint Paul’s robotics and engineering lab; where students were working on an autonomous go cart. On the tour we also explored the green house, solar telescoped observatory and other labs.

Perseus Class Project

The Perseus class completed their buoyancy experiments this week by building tin foil boats. Every team conceptualized and constructed a boat and made a prediction of how many marbles it would hold. Several teams beat their prediction several times over! After the first trials, teams revised their design and tested again. The students really enjoyed this project and are looking forward to their next exploration.
